Please, Make Up Your Mind!

Here are two “tips” written by the same Golf Pro – on different days.

Are you bringing rain with your drives?

If your drives are more like pop-ups, the probable cause is that you are coming into the ball at an angle that is too steep. Steep angles cause the ball to spin quickly off the face and shoot straight up. To fix this problem, start your takeaway by bringing the dub back slowly and close to the ground. On the down swing, feel your right elbow tuck into your side in order to keep the club at a wide arc as it approaches the ball. Practice these little swing changes and kiss the pop-ups goodbye.

For more power, try standing a little closer.

Standing away from the ball with your driver and extending your arms may feel powerful but it is actually a weak position. You will tend to swing more freely, which makes the dub feel heavier, and as a result, you will lose distance. Try addressing the ball by standing tall, with flexed knees and a slight bend in your back. Your turn will be better, and your club will turn on more upright plane that will deliver more power to the ball.

What is the difference between “a steep angle” (in tip one) and “a more upright plane” (in tip two)? If I take the club away, close to the ground as in tip one, does this mean that I have to swing down on a different plane? (Besides, aren’t your “swing plane” and your “swing arc” the same thing?)

I’m sorry Mr. Pro, but how can I use both of these tips at the same time – in the same swing?
I’m sooo confused!!!

Dear Reader,

Maybe there’s something that I don’t grasp here, but now you may understand why I get so upset with some of today’s golf instruction.

However, I guess it really doesn’t matter, because in Lesson #1 of Easy 80 Golf, both of these problems are eliminated anyway – without any of these swing thoughts standing in the way.

Happy Golfing,

Bob
