Let’s Add Some Yardage

May 11th, 2008

Most of us have heard that we must hold our golf club loosly - as if we were holding a live bird. We are told to hold the club tight enough that the bird can’t fly away, but loose enough that we don’t harm it. And, this is good advice.

But many of us should go one step further.

We need to hold our wrists, arms, and shoulders equally as loose.

The next time you’re at the practice range, try this: As you reach the top of your backswing let your hands, arms, wrists and shoulders relax while keeping most of your weight on the inside of your right foot. Don’t worry if you allow the club to go “below parallel” or “cross the line”. (John Daily has always done this, and to some extent so has Freddy Couples - two of the longest hitters in golf.)

Then shift your weight to your left foot and just let your momentum start the downswing. Do not try to control the club in any way. Just remain loose and relaxed, and let your swing happen.

For some of you, this advice will be a blessing - for others, a curse. It will depend on your natural swing. If it works for you, stay with it and you will add amazing yardage to all of your shots. If it is not for you, you will know it right away.

Happy Golfing,

Bob
